Dollar goes to R$ 5.67 and closes at the highest value in more than six months

Dollar rises to R$5.16 after three consecutive falls

After having reached the lowest value in six months yesterday (16), the dollar had its biggest daily increase in three weeks, in a day of global adjustment of the North American currency. The stock market fell for the first time after seven consecutive highs, amid heightened tensions in Ukraine and a fall in iron ore on the foreign market.

The commercial dollar closed this Thursday (17) sold at R$5.167, up by R$0.039 (+0.76%). After operating in stability for most of the morning, the price rose in the afternoon, reaching R$ 5.18 at the highest of the day, around 12:00.

Despite today’s high, the dollar accumulates a fall of 2.62% in February. In 2022, the currency accumulates a decline of 7.34%.

In the stock market, the day was also marked by adjustments. The B3 Ibovespa index closed Thursday at 113,528 points, down 1.43%. The indicator followed US stocks, which closed sharply lower, pressured by rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Today, Russia expelled the second most important official from the US embassy in the country, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) continued to denounce increased Russian troop movements near the border with Ukraine. An attack on an asylum in the east of the country blamed on Russian separatists has amplified tensions.

In Brazil, in addition to international factors, a movement to buy dollars by large investors boosted the US currency. In relation to the stock market, there was also a movement of profit taking, as investors sell shares to pocket recent profits. In addition, the decline in the price of iron ore contributed to the fall in mining shares.
