Dr. Eduardo Ortega, from Senacyt, referred this Monday to the reactivation of the vaccination days, after the holidays for national holidays, indicating that there are approximately 357 thousand people who have not completed the second dose.
“Through the vaccination of these adults we are going to protect children. The decision was made to vaccinate people from 55 years of age with the third booster dose, because the local epidemiology in Panama showed that this age group was quite affected by hospitalization and illness, ”he stressed.
He said that next year when we have pediatric vaccines and we have seen what is happening in the United States with the vaccination of children from 4 to 11 years old, “then we are going to vaccinate that group to be able to open schools.”
He added that as long as elementary school children are not vaccinated, it will not be possible to have the necessary number of children in the classroom and the number of days of weekly classes necessary, affecting the learning of the little ones.
He recommended that during the next few days a good traceability should be made to know if these activities that were carried out during national days, where the adequate distancing or mixing of multiple social bubbles was maintained, does not result in a possible rebound.
The doctor also referred to the Delta variant, mentioning that the virus continues to circulate and this variant is latent in our country. “This represents today, most likely 100% of the variants that circulate in the country. We know that it is more transmissible ”, he specified.
He asserted that Panama has achieved a temporary control of Covid-19, thanks to the collaboration of all Panamanians and the strategy of the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Fund, however, it cannot be said that the pandemic has disappeared from the country .
