DGAC says that the departure of almost half a ton of cocaine from Viru Viru does not put category 1 of the country’s main airport at risk

On February 12 of this year, almost half a ton of cocaine was loaded onto a plane belonging to the Spanish airline Wamos, which was rented by Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), bound for Madrid. That drug was intercepted at the Barajas airport and Spain decided not to notify Bolivia. This illegal operation does not endanger the category 1 status of the Viru Viru airport, reported the director of the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC), José García Terceros.

“The issue of category 1, which is based on the evaluation of the protocols of what are operations, airworthiness and personnel licenses, is not at risk due to this event (discovery of cocaine in Spain). There are opportunities for improvement in some entities that have to strengthen their action mechanisms; however, in (what has to do with) category 1 of the Bolivian State we have a rating of more than 90% in the degree of compliance with the standards and recommended methods,” García said in an interview with state media.

The official mentioned that DGAC personnel are trained to detect threatsbetween bombs, dangerous artifacts and dangerous goods, so as not to jeopardize the safety of operations.

In February of this administration, at the Barajas airport in Madrid, Almost half a ton of cocaine was detected that had left the Viru Viru airport on a Wamos airline plane, which was rented by BoA. In this case there are two people detained in the Palmasola prison and the investigation is ongoing.
