Diputado Edwin Mejía: «El cambio ha frenado la producción agrícola»

Deputy Edwin Mejía: “The change has slowed down agricultural production”

The deputy for the province of Vega, Edwin Mejiaensures that instead of the government strengthening and promoting national production, as a prelude to a possible shortage as a result of the convulsive international scenario, agricultural production has suffered a worrying slowdown in the last two years.

As an example, Mejía cited the production of rice according to the central bankwhich contracted 8.4%, only if we compare it with the last quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, “an indicator that the government should move to action, due to how worrying it is in the case of a food that the Dominican He waits for him every day at his table.”

In this sense, the legislator Dominican Liberation Party (PLD)explained that what is alarming about all this is that among the main causes cited in the report itself that offers the data, the origin of this slowdown is due to “the reduction in the tasks planted in the second planting at the end of 2021, as a consequence of the decrease in the water reservoirs of the dams that constitute the irrigation sources”which in his opinion “They are perfectly identifiable to prevent and manage them.”

Mejía proposes that in order to prevent the price crisis from getting worse, and to manage to avoid a possible arrival of a food crisis in the country, the authorities should meet with the productive sectors to audit the current production, which we can expand, and in that sense put in place that responds to the local reality and mitigates the international reality.
