The Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, Álvaro Delgado, came out again to defend the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC), of which 135 articles are contested in the referendum that will take place on March 27. If the majority of citizens vote “Yes”, these will be annulled and the rest will remain in force.
“It is a government law. Perhaps it is, along with the budget law and accountability, one of the flagship laws of the government, the heart of the government program, which was also said to be done and then it was done, based on the document Commitment for the Country, which was the government program that the coalition presented to the citizens in the ballot, with which, as a member of the government and without political inhibition, for me it is fundamental. Not only do it, but it is an obligation to go out and defend the no to the repeal”, Delgado said in an interview with In perspective.
He repeated the words of Luis Lacalle Pou, who has described the law as “good” and assures that in the months in which it has been applied -more than 20- it has generated “positive effects”.
So much so that I remember that we had a difference of opinion with the president of the republic at that time, because in January he wanted to post the draft of the LUC on the website of the elected government and I said to wait until it was finished and he wanted to hang it up so that everyone could know where he was going and he hung it up. Later he delivered it to all the political parties before sending it to Parliament so that everyone has information on a law of 400 articles, of which 52% of the articles were voted by the FA, ”added the senior official.
Undecided and invalid vote
Delgado says he is aware of the large number of undecided voters who confirm all the polls regarding the referendum. “The most notorious issue, and I think all the polls agree, is the high level of undecided, beyond the projection of the undecided. The issue is that surely many people define themselves this week. The pollsters themselves speak that there is an open end, let’s not forget that for it to be repealed they have to get 50% plus one, ”he said.
And he criticized the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, who reminded undecided people that voting blank is “voting ‘No’”.
“Now another discussion has appeared that has to do with the annulled vote, I even saw Carolina Cosse explain why if you are undecided it is better to vote annulled, which is an absolutely anthology thing, the explanation and the campaign for the annulled vote. It is a lack of respect for those who collected the signatures”, Delgado snapped.
