Defenders ask the UN to renew the resolution on the crisis in Nicaragua

Human rights organizations demanded that the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) “renew and reinforce” for two years the resolution on the situation in Nicaragua and the mandate of experts in the field of human rights to continue monitoring the Ortega’s repression.

They reiterate that international pressure is necessary in the face of “the exceptional refusal of the government to cooperate with the UN human rights organizations, which is reprehensible. The two UN treaty body committees against torture denounced the government’s refusal to cooperate in an unprecedented way, while authorities have also rejected reviews by four other UN human rights committees in the past year. UN experts from five “Special Procedures” mandates also issued repeated requests for visits to the country, without receiving a response,” the organizations refer.

They add that “UN experts from five “Special Procedures” mandates also issued repeated requests for visits to the country, without receiving a response. The analysis of civil society based on information from the UN and the Inter-American system also shows the lack of absolute implementation by the government of the 14 recommendations of resolution 49/3 of this Human Rights Council”.

“For these reasons, we launch today our global call for a resolution on Nicaragua that renews for a period of two years the mandate of the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua, and the monitoring mandate of the OHCHR (Office of the High Commissioner for the UN for Human Rights)”, express the more than 30 signatory organizations.

This morning the office of the UN High Commissioner, Volker Turk, presented an update on the situation of the “political, social and rights crisis” that Nicaragua is going through. Through this update, the international organization denounced the worsening of the repression, especially against the political prisoners of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

They also highlighted the lack of cooperation that exists on the part of the Nicaraguan regime in terms of rights, mentioning that it has denied entry to experts and mechanisms to verify the situation of political prisoners in the face of complaints of “torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment ».

“We call on all governments to support said resolution at the next session of the Human Rights Council, and reinforce its intersectional approach, paying special attention to the situation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, migrants and forcibly displaced persons. , the people detained for political reasons, and the relatives of the victims”, concludes the statement of the organizations.
