Death toll rises to 210 after rains in Petrópolis, Brazil

National Civil Defense reported this Thursday that the death toll rose to 210 after torrential rains that caused landslides and floods in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Through its account on the social network Twitter, the entity published its most recent report and indicated that 24 people were rescued alive, 48 remain missing and 891 are homeless.

For its part, the state Civil Police reported that only 191 bodies of the deceased were identified, while 181 bodies were distributed in funeral homes to proceed with the corresponding ceremonies.

Likewise, the police authorities reported that 70,000 people reside in localities with a high probability of landslides, in case of the occurrence of new landslides or floods in the area.

Accordingly, a thousand Army and Marine forces operate in the affected region to rescue the greatest number of people, guarantee the safety of those who still reside in the area, control traffic and distribute donations.

“Currently, 847 people receive assistance from Social Assistance, with support to meet the essential needs of the population, neighbors who had to leave their homes are cared for in 12 schools that function as a support point,” said the Civil Defense.

The Program for the Location and Identification of the Disappeared of the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro was ordered to, from a point established in the Regional Technical-Scientific Police Post, guide the families of the victims and inform the protocol adopted for the recognition of the bodies.
