Death toll from explosion at Hotel Saratoga rises to 40

MIAMI, United States.- The Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported This Monday afternoon, the death toll from the explosion that occurred last Friday at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana rose to 40, after eight lifeless bodies were recovered from the accident site today.

According to an official report, six hospitals in the capital treat the wounded. There are already 94 injured, of which 18 are hospitalized and 36 patients have been discharged.

Likewise, official information assures that, 72 hours after the explosion, at the Saratoga Hotel, located in one of the busiest areas of Havana, excavation work and the search for the victims who remain missing continue.

According to Cuban News Agency, at the General Calixto García University Hospital in Havana, “nine injured patients are treated as a result of the explosion that occurred in the facility.” This Monday, adds the update, one of those admitted to the burn room should be discharged.

For their part, 19 families had reported the disappearance of their loved ones, said Reinaldo García Zapata, governor of Havana. However, although the exact number of people who have not been able to be located is unknown, the relatives of the disappeared estimate that between 12 and 13 people are still imprisoned under the rubble.

Among the 40 fatalities in the accident, caused by a gas leak that caused the Hotel to explode and affected several adjacent buildings, including a school, was Cristina López-Cerón Urgarte, a 28-year-old Spanish woman who was visiting the island with her boyfriend César, who is seriously injured.

Among those injured and deceased by the accident are hotel workers and citizens who were circulating near it at the time of the explosion.

According to official press reports, the rescue and rescue forces are working in the basement of the hotel, where it is believed that more people may be trapped.
