The former commissioner of the OAS General Secretariat for the crisis of Venezuelan migrants and refugees, David Smolansky, reported that as of July 16 he joins the work of the presidential candidate María Corina Machado. David Smolansky, former mayor of the El Hatillo municipality and former commissioner of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the crisis of Venezuelan migrants and refugees, announced this Sunday, July 16, that he has joined the team of presidential candidate María Corina Machado. .

“As of today I assume the coordination of the movement of Venezuelans abroad of the presidential candidate, María Corina Machado,” Smolansky reported through his Twitter account, a message in which he thanked the trust of the leader of Vente Venezuela and assured agree with her “that this is a fight of good against evil that transcends ideologies and partisan militancy.”

Smolansky explained that he is going to independently coordinate the participation and organization of Venezuelans living abroad so that they join Machado’s cause; He stressed that in this task some members of his team will accompany him, working during his years in the Mayor’s Office of El Hatillo.

For his part, Machado responded to the tweet thanking him for his trust and welcoming him. «David, I am excited and proud to have your energy, experience and work in this great movement that grows every day. We are meeting Venezuelans of different generations and trades, with a wide diversity of ideas and trajectories, and with a common dream: to meet again here to build a great country together,” the candidate trilled.

On June 15, Smolansky left his functions as commissioner of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the crisis of Venezuelan migrants and refugees, a position he assumed on September 8, 2018. He did not detail the reasons for the cessation of his work.

More than seven million people have left Venezuela seeking protection and a better life; the majority –more than 6 million people– have been welcomed by countries of Latin America and the Caribbean; reports the UN Agency for Refugees (unhcr).
