Foreign Minister Denis Moncada, on behalf of Daniel Ortega, announced at a press conference before the regime’s propaganda media that this Friday the Government of Nicaragua sent a letter to the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) to announce that the separation process with the regional body.
Moncada reported that Ortega, in his capacity as head of the Executive Power, denounced the Charter of the OAS, in response to the requests made by the other Electoral, Judicial and Legislative powers and also at a request from the deputies representing Nicaragua to the Central American Parliament.
Moncada stressed that in the communication sent directly to the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, he emphasized that Nicaragua’s decision was due to the constant “interventionist attitudes” of the regional body, due to the resolutions referring to the Nicaraguan crisis in which it has condemned the outrages of the Ortega regime.
“Instructed by the constitutional president of Nicaragua, Commander Daniel Ortega Saavedra and in compliance with Article 67 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, I am writing to you to officially notify you of our unwavering decision to denounce the Charter of the Organization of the American States, in accordance with its Article 143, which initiates Nicaragua’s definitive withdrawal and resignation from this organization, ”he cites the letter sent to Almagro, which was read by Moncada during his appearance.
According to article 143 of the Charter of the OAS, This may be denounced by any of the Member States, by written communication to the General Secretariat, which will communicate in each case to the others the notification of complaint that it receives.
“After two years have elapsed from the date on which the General Secretariat receives a notification of denunciation, this Letter will cease to have effect with respect to the complainant State, and the latter will be separated from the Organization after having complied with the obligations arising from this present letter. Letter ”, he adds.
On November 12, at the General Assembly of Foreign Ministers of the OAS, 25 countries passed a resolution declaring “no democratic legitimacy” the voting, in which Daniel Ortega was re-elected for the fourth consecutive time, without political competition and without democratic guarantees.
The OAS Foreign Ministers established November 30 as the deadline for the Permanent Council to carry out a “collective assessment” of the situation in the country, “in accordance with the OAS Charter and the Inter-American Democratic Charter,” and to “take appropriate actions, ”which would put the Ortega regime in the face of a possible suspension of the body.
Since the General Assembly approved this resolution, Ortega increased its attacks against the regional body and initiated a joint strategy to demonstrate a supposed independence of powers in Nicaragua, which gradually spoke out in harmony, asking Ortega to denounce the OAS Charter and begin the exit process of the organism.
“Nicaragua promotes and defends respect for the principles that govern International Law, compliance with the Charter of the United Nations, its principles and purposes aimed at respecting sovereign equality among States, non-interference in internal affairs, abstention from the use of force and the non-imposition of unilateral, illegal and coercive measures. It is obliged to comply with the principles of the OAS, but irresponsibly ignores them, also transgressing its own Charter ”, quotes the letter sent to Almagro.
“The Organization of American States has been designed as a diplomatic political forum that was born under the influence of the United States as an instrument of interference and intervention, and its action against Nicaragua of this organization that operates permanently in Washington, has the mission of facilitating the hegemony of The United States with its interventionism on the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. What is unacceptable for Nicaragua, we reject and condemn ”, he adds.
Regime is not exempt from its commitments
The Unamos Movement, through its social networks, pointed out that Nicaragua’s exit from the OAS -announced by the Ortega regime- is a “consequence of the defeat of its farce on November 7”, votes that were widely criticized and denounced by national and international organizations, which indicated that they did not have the minimum guarantees for a democratic, fair, free and transparent process.
“They are repudiated and isolated internationally. The regime does not represent the will of Nicaraguans. The commitments to human rights and democracy are inalienable ”, they highlighted.
Alexa Zamora, leader of the Blue and White National Unity (UNAB), explained that, despite the decision of the Ortega-Murillo regime to announce its departure from the OAS in the face of an imminent expulsion, “it does not exempt the OAS from its powers to take decisions and actions related to the state of democracy, security and human rights in Nicaragua ”.
He emphasized that the State of Nicaragua is not exempt “from the enforceability of the fulfillment of the acquired commitments, as established in the procedure for requesting withdrawal.”
The political activist indicates that the process of leaving an OAS state can last approximately two years before being finalized and warns that the hasty decision of the regime could “accelerate the taking of bilateral actions by certain member states.”
