The rupture of a private dam, caused by heavy rains that raised the level of the Cariús River, in the south of Ceará, caused flooding and flooding of streets, houses, businesses and schools in the municipality of Farias Brito.
Speaking this Sunday (9) at Brazil Agencythe state coordinator for Protection and Civil Defense of Ceará, Lieutenant Colonel Haroldo Gondim, reported that the dam rupture occurred in the district of Cachoeira dos Bezerras, located on the border with the city of Nova Olinda, and far from the center of the municipality of Farias Brito.
“This rupture, together with the rain, raised the river level quickly, but it also dropped quickly. But when it goes up, it causes a lot of trouble, because it enters homes, schools”.
The coordinator informed that the rain was not so intense, reaching only 34 millimeters. “It rained well in the region, but it wasn’t torrential rain that caused this, no”. According to Gondim, the Cariús River runs through other cities “and is already taking water from other locations”.

There were no casualties or destruction of houses. Only displaced people, who suffered material losses, such as furniture, said the lieutenant colonel. “All this causes a lot of damage and the city becomes very dirty, with mud. There was no destruction at all”. A team from the Fire Department and Civil Defense remains on site to help the population.
Tomorrow (10), Haroldo Gondim announced the arrival in Farias Brito of dam technicians to assess the safety of other private dams in the region and that could cause the same inconvenience. “An evaluation will be carried out where it deserves to be carried out”.
According to the state coordinator, there is concern about the district of Cariutaba, located in the lower part of the city, which already has high water levels. Due to its location, this district receives excess water from the river that runs through the rest of the city.
After mitigating the situation in the affected municipality, the owner of the dam that broke must be identified, with a view to possible accountability.
