Madrid Spain.- The Cuban writer Katherine Bisquet Rodríguez received the Ciudad de Alcalá award in the category of Poetry, for her work “Esquizopatria”.
During the award ceremony, held this weekend at the Teatro Salón Cervantes, in Alcalá de Henares, he explained that “these poems were born within a process of cultural existence against state violence in Cuba.”
“This collection of poems is my imprisoned friends, my right to return, the right to return of all exiled Cubans, it is the people of Cuba in the street asking for freedom. But it is also the matter of what underlies, the things that we do not see, of what we hide from ourselves, of what exists, even if we do not perceive it”, added the activist in front of the public present.
From their social networks declared: “Today I received the poetry award from the city of Alcalá de Henares. I don’t even know what I feel. But it is not full joy. I will only be able to have that joy when I see my people free. It was really exciting to share the stage with Joaquín Sabina, who was awarded the prize for arts and letters from the city of Cervantes. But it was more exciting to see my friends a few meters away from me.”
In addition to the renowned Spanish singer-songwriter Joaquín Sabina, Paco Díaz Salas, in Visual Arts; Beatriz Sánchez, in Photography; Benjamin Pulido Navas, in Narrative; and José Enrique Cabrero Barragán, in Journalism.
The poetic work of Katherine Bisquet, a graduate of Letters from the University of Havana, includes collections of poems such as “Uranio impoverished” (2021) and “Ciudad Nuclear mon amour” (2020).
Last year, after being imprisoned on several occasions by the regime on the island, Bisquet was forced to leave Cuba for his political activism and his position against the dictatorship.
Along with his partner, fellow activist Hamlet Lavastida, they took refuge in Poland in exchange for the visual artist’s release.
