MIAMI, United States. — The sentences of the demonstrators imprisoned in the anti-government protests of July 11 and 12, 2021 was the topic discussed at a recent meeting held between the Cuban regime and a delegation of ambassadors from European Union (EU) countries with representation in Havana.
Sources assured the EFE Agency that some twenty diplomats, led by the community ambassador on the island, Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, were last Wednesday with the Cuban Minister of Justice, Óscar Silvera. The meeting took place as part of the mechanisms established within the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement signed in 2017 between Havana and the EU.
The information indicates that, during the meeting, European diplomats suggested that the Cuban authorities offer a “pardon” to the 9/11 protesters who are still imprisoned, to which Silvera replied that there is no legal possibility of an amnesty in Cuba.
In addition to the 9/11 prisoners, the European side expressed concern about the repercussions of the new Cuban Penal Code, which entered into force last December and toughens the penalties for protesters, dissidents and activists.
EFE He adds that the meeting “did not address bills currently being processed and that are generating some social controversy, such as the Social Communication Law, which prohibits independent media, or the Public Health Law, which would legalize euthanasia.”
For its part, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) described the meeting as a “sincere, open, respectful and profitable conversation,” according to a statement issued by that state agency.
At the end of 2022, the European representation had met with members of the Supreme People’s Court of Cuba and it is expected that it will also meet with representatives of the Island’s General Prosecutor’s Office in the near future.
