MIAMI, United States. — Cuban boxer Andy Cruz, Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion and triple world boxing monarch, was caught in an illegal attempt to leave the country, the digital portal reported on Tuesday Hit.
The official media outlet reproduced a note issued by the Cuban Boxing Federation (FCB), the governing body of that sport on the island, which described the incident as a “serious indiscipline.”
“The Cuban Boxing Federation informs that it has been notified about the participation of the athlete Andy Cruz Gómez in an attempt to leave the country illegally. The fact, which is typified as serious indiscipline in the regulations of our sport, will generate the corresponding analysis, which we will inform in a timely manner, ”says the statement.
The Federation indicates that Cruz not only tried to leave the country illegally, but that in recent weeks he had missed important commitments in national and international events.
“We remember that Cruz was absent from the training sessions prior to the Playa Girón National Tournament, and did not travel to the venue for that competition. Before, his evident demotivation conditioned that he not be part of the team that represented us in the debut of Domadores de Cuba in professional circuits”.
During the last week, various media echoed information from the digital portal OnCuba, where it was claimed that Cruz had left the Island for an unknown country. The fact had been revealed to that media outlet by people close to the boxer who requested anonymity.
The boxer’s escape attempt occurs at a time when Cuba is experiencing a mass exodus caused by the worst economic crisis in three decades and by the worsening repression against activists and citizens.
Among the active sports figures who have left Cuba in recent months are the wrestler Ismael Borrero, Olympic champion in Rio 2016, and the canoeist Fernando Dayán Jorge, Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020. Also arriving in the United States last weekend was the ex-javelinist Osleidys Menendez2004 Athens Olympic champion.
