Cuban musician César “Pupy” Pedroso dies

MADRID, Spain.- The popular Cuban musician César “Pupy” Pedroso died this Sunday in Havana at the age of 75.

“One of the essentials has died,” said the official media when breaking the news.

Although the cause of death has not been indicated, last May it transpired that he had been admitted to the cardiovascular hospital in Havana.

“Pupy” Pedroso, pianist, arranger and composer, since 2001 he was the director of the orchestra “Pupy y los que Son, Son”, founded by him after separating from Los Van Van. He had been a founder of the latter together with Juan Formell, in 1969. The Van Van He composed some of his best-known songs such as “That’s good”, “Today marks six weeks”, “Temba, tumba, timba” and “El negro está cocinando”.

He had also integrated the groups Fascinación, Sensación, Revé and the Bolero Ensemble.

“With his band, Los que Son Son, Pupy set out to break the mold, differentiate himself in timbre and constantly renew himself. Among the defining elements that characterize the orchestra are the freshness of its lyrics and not ignoring traditional rhythms such as those that come from son and salsa, forming a fiery mixture that makes even the most lousy dancer move”, he reviewed. For its part, the Musical Recordings and Editions Company (EGREM) expressed through Facebook: “Today Cuban music is in mourning. (…) The EGREM says goodbye to a friend, a man who never forgot to be faithful to his commitment as an artist. We deeply regret his departure and hug his family and fans.”

Pedroso, together with Juan Formell and José Luis Quintana, contributed to the creation of the songo rhythm.

In 1997 he received the Gold Record award from the Caribe Production record company for having sold more than 5,000 copies of the album. The Forbidden fruit; and the National Music Award in 2013.
