MIAMI, United States. — The sports authorities in Cuba denounced the abandonment in Mexico of boxer Osvel Caballero, who represented the island in confrontations against professionals from that country.
A statement appeared on the social media accounts of the Tamers of Cuba and the official newspaper Hit points out that Caballero will not return to the Caribbean country, a fact considered a serious indiscipline by the Cuban regime.
“Oblivious to his contractual obligations, Osvel Caballero decided not to return to Cuba after fighting for the third time in professional boxing. We reiterate our rejection of indiscipline such as these, which trample on the commitment made”, expresses the brief statement.
Caballero, bronze medalist at the Belgrade 2021 World Cup and gold winner at the Pan American Games in Lima 2019, had achieved his third success as a professional last weekend (two of them on the fast track) after defeating the Mexican by knockout. Over the last year several boxers from the Island have left the Cuban national team with the aim of trying their luck in professional boxing.
Recently arrived in the United States Dainier PeroPan American gold in Lima 2019 and member of the delegation that competed for Cuba in the Tokyo 2020 Games, where he ran out of medals.
In August of this year, the young fighter Billy Rodríguez had also arrived in the United States after staying in Mexico.
In March, Cuban boxers Kevin Brown and Herich Ruiz left the national delegation during the Continental Championship held in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Another of the important casualties was that of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Andy Cruz, who was surprised by the Cuban authorities in an illegal departure from the country.
