Cuba will export tons of stone to Mexico for the construction of the Mayan Train

MIAMI, United States. – Cuba will export up to 200,000 tons of rajón stone per month to Mexico for the construction of the Mayan Train, one of the flagship projects of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Cuban state media recently reported.

In accordance with statements to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) from Andrés Díaz Guerrero, head of the operations group of the Center Port Services Company, in the open-air warehouses of zone two in Obourke (Cienfuegos), there are some 20,000 tons of stone awaiting shipment to Yucatán .

When commercialization begins, in their first month they must handle 90,000 tons of stone, a figure that will increase in stages, until reaching a rate of 200,000 tons per month, the official said.

According to the same source, the stone that will be exported to Mexico comes from the Arriete quarry, in the Cienfuegos municipality of Palmira. The loads have been transported by rail to the yard of the maritime terminal.

The Mayan Train is a megaproject of the Mexican Government that consists of a passenger and cargo railway line through Yucatan, according to reports the news agency EFE.

Last November, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), Indian that his country could buy ballast from Cuba to build the route of the Mayan Train.

In one of his regular press conferences, the president indicated that the crushed stone used for railways could be brought to Mexico in larger quantities by sea from Cuba, although he acknowledged that such a decision would spark criticism.

“I am going to comment something so that our adversaries question us. It is very likely that for this stretch we will bring ballast, which is here,” AMLO said as he pointed to Cuba on a map.

The works of the Mayan Train have been in progress since 2018. Its inauguration is scheduled for December 2023.

The project foresees the construction of 1,460 kilometers of roads in the Yucatan peninsula, which will connect it with the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

According to the Mexican government, The Mayan Train project aims to improve people’s quality of life, increase tourism, knowledge of the national heritage, protect the environment and support sustainable development.

However, several environmental groups have criticized the impact on the ecosystem caused by the construction of the train.
