Cuba will be getting warmer and with less rain, scientists warn

(EFE).- Cuban scientists warn that the island will maintain an upward trend in its temperatures and that the rains will be less and less, official media reported this Thursday.

The country’s projections show that, if measures are not taken to stop global warming, the increase in the average annual temperature will be above one degree Celsius in 2030 and will be 3.5 degrees in 2070, taking the 1961 period as a reference. -1990.

These estimates are above the 1.5 established by the international community to combat climate change, an increase set in the Paris Agreement as a limit to avoid the most catastrophic consequences of climate change.

On the other hand, rainfall would suffer a reduction of close to 10%, considering the historical average.

These calculations, quoted by the official press, have been extracted from the first biennial update report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The document – the result of a project led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment – was ready at the end of last year.

According to the state agency Prensa Latina, the province of Granma detected a temperature of 39.3 degrees, a historical national record. The previous mark was broken in 2019 in the same province when thermometers reached 39.1 degrees Celsius.

To put a stop to this situation, the Island launched a 100-year plan that was presented last November –during COP26– through the documentary Cuba’s life task: combating climate change.
