(EFE).- The Cuban authorities repatriated this Wednesday 178 Haitian migrants that had landed on the coast north of the Caibarién municipalityin Villa Clara, official media reported.
The group of Haitians, made up of 31 children, 46 women and 101 men, were traveling on a boat that capsized at the end of June off the coast of Cayo Francés, and they were rescued and cared for in temporary accommodation until they were returned to their country by airway.
The deputy governor of Villa Clara, Milaxy Sánchez, said that the return operation of the migrants was carried out “by virtue of the international commitments on migration, of which Cuba is a party,” according to the Prensa Latina agency.
On May 24, another boat, with 842 people from Haiti and whose objective was to reach US territory, also landed on the shores of Caibarién.
This large group of Haitian emigrants was returned to Haiti on six flights departing from the Abel Santamaría International Airport in Villa Clara. The closest point between the United States and Haiti is 950 kilometers away.
According to official data, from 2001 to 2021, a total of 76 boats carrying more than 4,000 Haitian immigrants arrived in the province of Guantánamo alone.
