Cuba has been “more than 60 years without elections”, “more electoral culture” is necessary

Madrid Spain.- The Commission for the Support of the Cuban Transition raised the need for a transparent electoral process to choose the rulers in a Cuba free of Castroism during the first meeting of the Electoral Subcommission held this week in Miami.

The meeting, chaired by the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ARC), was attended by leaders of Cuban exile organizations, representatives of the island’s civil society and international experts who established as an essential factor in the electoral plan during the transition towards democracy in Cuba the legalization of political parties and the electoral guarantees contained in the Cuban Constitution of 1940.

According to the Spanish news agency EFEDr. Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, coordinator of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance and of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, highlighted the idea of a semi-parliamentary system, since this promotes “consensus” and limits “the powers of the Executive that have wreaked havoc throughout the history of Cuba.”

For his part, the president of the Movement for Democracy and Freedom of Cuba, Ángel Moya Acosta, who participated from the island, pointed out the importance of establishing electoral guarantees for “all future Cuban voters and for candidates for public office.”

Because Cuba “has been without elections for more than 60 years,” opponents insisted on the need to develop more culture on the electoral issue.

The Commission of Support for the Cuban Transitioncreated in February of this year, has among its objectives to prepare a transition plan that is ready before “the regime falls in Cuba” and lay the foundations for the eventual reconstruction of the country.
