Cuba: Eduardo Arrocha is awarded the 2022 National Dance Award

The scenic designer Eduardo Arrocha (Havana, 1934) was honored this Friday with the National Dance Award 2022, coinciding with the celebrations in Cuba for the International Day of this artistic manifestation, official media on the Island report.

The jury in charge of defining the laureate on this occasion was chaired by the teacher Laura Alonso, last year’s National Dance Prize, and was also made up of the national prizewinners Rosario Cárdenas and Joanne García, as well as Nieves Lafertte and Yuris Nórido. , in accordance with the report from the agency Latin Press (PL).

The decision was based on the long career of Maestro Arrocha, who, in addition to his work in the plastic arts, adds more than half a century focused on the design of shows for dramatic works, cinema, cabaret and theater. dance. Particularly noteworthy in the latter is his work together with the notable choreographer and researcher Ramiro Guerra.

Due to his versatility and his extensive and successful career linked to different artistic manifestations, Arrocha has also been awarded the National Theater Award in 2007, and the National Design Award in 2013.

In his training, the outstanding designer received courses at the National Opera Theater in Prague (1966) and the Bratislava Opera and Ballet (1971), which consolidated his career on the Cuban stage. In his work, his notable works stand out for the National Modern Dance Ensemble, where he served as chief designer and technical director, the information underlines.

«Nuptial Chronicle», «Love Octet», «Strange Fruit», «Peasant Suite», «Black Impromptu» and «Baroque Entreacto» are some of the pieces that bear his stamp, which he also printed in the National Balletfor which he has been in charge of designs for «Giselle» and then for «The new Odyssey» and «Amazonia».
