MIAMI, United States. – Russia and Cuba resumed direct flights between the two countries this week with the launch of the Russian-Cuban charter air program, according to reported the official media RT.
Two flights from Moscow have already landed at the airports of Varadero and Cayo Coco, according to the aforementioned media. Russian aircraft have permission for seven weekly operations on the Island (four at the Varadero airport and three at Cayo Coco).
The resumption of flights between Russia and Cuba occurred despite the closure of airspace for Russian aircraft decreed by the US and most European countries for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In accordance with RTthe Cuban authorities have confirmed that Russian tourism to the island is “a priority”, whose objective is for Russia to remain among the top three issuing markets for tourists to the Caribbean country.
At the end of August it transpired that EU the Russian airline Nordwind Airlines would once again connect that country with the tourist destinations of Varadero and Cayo Coco.
A statement from the tour operator Pegas Touristik released on that date indicated that the route to Varadero would start on October 1 and would have four weekly frequencies operated by Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with a capacity for a maximum of 400 passengers.
Speaking to the state agency Latin PressJuan Carlos Escalona, Tourism Counselor of the Cuban regime’s embassy in Moscow, assured that other Russian airlines would also make trips to the island.
“We really hope that other tour operators and airlines will follow the example of Pegas Touristik and Nordwind Airlines. Cuba is ready for the return of Russian tourists,” the official stressed.
With the aim of generating confidence among tourists from that country, Escalona announced that before the end of this year the Caribbean country will have completed the necessary procedures for the acceptance and service of Russian MIR cards.
