Cuba advocates a greater confrontation with gender violence

Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman urged today to make visible and give an immediate response to situations of gender-based violence during a workshop on this problem.
held at the National Hotel of Cuba.

Representatives of the Federation of Cuban Women and activists from other institutions discussed at the meeting the challenges for the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategy for the prevention and care of gender violence and in the family setting.

Gender-based violence is present on the public agenda and in the media, assured the deputy prime minister, who encouraged an exhaustive review of institutional structures and their actions around this issue.

In the exchange, the panelists addressed the scope and challenges of the Strategy in the Cuban context, gender violence in legal terms, as well as its media presence and the challenges that this entails.

Clotilde Proveyer, Full Professor at the University of Havana and specialist in gender issues, stated that the Strategy is binding in nature and is part of the political will of the Cuban State and Government, which makes it practically a law whose compliance is responsibility of the organizations.

He added that the document covers all social areas, including the local-community sphere, and contains the actions to be carried out by each institution in the face of a situation of gender violence.

The importance of the committed and permanent participation of the various actors involved, who have among their social responsibility the care and prevention of this scourge and for whom the aforementioned document constitutes an indispensable tool, was insisted on.

The Comprehensive Strategy for prevention and attention to gender violence and in the family scenario is designed until the year 2030, is among the country’s sustainable development objectives and includes the intermediate evaluation and monitoring of its mandatory compliance aspects.
