Law 18,446 of 2008, created the National Human Rights and Ombudsman Institution (INDDHH), and established that the authorities must be elected to integrate its Board of Directors. It also provided that the renewal of authorities should be partial to ensure the continuity of the policies deployed.

“Despite this, official parliamentary spokesmen announced that they will apply the scalpel thoroughly and appoint the new members through a political quota, as if it were an entity or a ministry: there will be two representatives from the National Party, one from the Colorado Party and another from Town meeting. They will leave a position at the disposal of the Broad Front”, Grisoni quoted El País as saying.

Grisoni stressed that the creation of the INDDHH meant enormous institutional progress on the path of deepening democracy and its quality, and it is a fundamental instrument for those most vulnerable and unprotected citizens who do not have access to an organization, to know their rights, to claim and demand their implementation”.

Remember that according to the provisions of article 39 of the Law, social organizations accredited before the INDDHH must propose candidates. Parliamentarians may receive proposals and prepare lists if they deem it convenient for their treatment in the General Assembly.

“The integration of the next Board of Directors is an important issue for those who are committed to strengthening the country’s democratic institutions to continue advancing. The trade union movement, the student movement, human rights organizations, cooperatives, the general public must be alert and make their opinion and concerns felt in this regard. The future members of the Directive Commission of the INDDHH must have a solid and effective knowledge and life commitment with the norms of Human Rights, in the declarative and also in their life trajectory”, expressed Grisoni in an editorial published by El Popular.

there is no justification

At the same time, he questioned the decision of the government coalition to grant a place to Cabildo Abierto in the next Board of Directors, “a political party that has justified and defended those mainly responsible for the disappearances and crimes of State terrorism.”

“There are no justifications or explanations for the serious human rights violations. As always, the deployment and citizen mobilization will be decisive. There are never lost battles”, she sentenced.
