Credit from France benefits Cuba’s nephrology network

The National Network of Nephrology of Cuba benefited from the start-up of 332 hemodialysis equipment acquired thanks to a loan from Franceaccording to press information.

The credit, granted by the French Development Agency (AFD) and whose amount is not disclosed in the reports, will contribute to “a significant change in the sustainability and quality of care for patients with chronic kidney disease in a hemodialysis program” of the island, refers the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

The equipment, which has been operational since last April, has served to replace “long-used” devices and is in operation, with a “positive impact”, in the 56 nephrology services distributed throughout the Cuban territory, adds the news release.

Dr. Guillermo Guerra, director of the National Institute of Nephrology, explained that the country is expected to receive “more than 250 teams with the same characteristics” in June, which will also arrive in Cuba as part of the cooperation with the AFD.

Similarly, “9 service units with 102 hemodialysis machines and five reverse osmosis water treatment systems” will be incorporated. These machines will arrive at the end of this year and at the beginning of 2023 and will be distributed in seven provinces outside of Havana, according to the official information, cited by the agency EFE.

The units are expected to benefit some 200 patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis treatment in their own homes.

In this regard, Patrice Paoli, French ambassador to Cuba, pointed out that health is a good that represents a fundamental axis in the relationship between the European country and the island. He also explained that the more than 500 dialysis teams that will be completed in next June, 25 artificial kidney machines will be added, points out the ACN.

The diplomat stressed that this cooperation constitutes “an important step for the health system and for patients who require this type of treatment, because the equipment has a high quality in correspondence with world standards.”

AFD has been present in Cuba since 2016 and provides assistance to the island in sectors such as health, transportation, water, sanitation and other fundamental aspects for sustainable development, the report concludes.
