The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khanannounced that his office will continue to investigate the alleged crimes against humanity denounced in Venezuela. This occurs after Chavismo requested that the investigation remains in the hands of the judicial authorities of the country.
According to Khan, Venezuela has not submitted new information that justifies that I should leave the investigation in your hands, even so, now it is in the hands of the Preliminary Trial Chamber of the Court defines who assumes the investigation.
“Although the Venezuelan authorities did not agree with my decision to open an investigation, I considered it to their honor that, even so, sought to engage with my Office to develop stronger cooperation and identify ways we can support accountability through of processes at the national levelKhan highlighted.
Given the decision of the ICC prosecutor, the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, said he trusts “that there will be no impunity because only in this way will compensation be achieved for the victims and the non-repetition of the events will be guaranteed. May this further encourage our struggle for justice, freedom and democracy.”
