Covid-19: vaccination with the fourth dose in Rio does not reach 40%

Vaccination against covid-19 in the city of Rio de Janeiro is proceeding slowly. Even with the increase in the number of cases of the disease seen in recent weeks, the population has not sought the posts to take the booster of immunization.Covid-19: vaccination with the fourth dose in Rio does not reach 40%

Despite the initial success of the campaign last year, which reached 99.9% of the adult population with one dose and 99.8% with two doses or a single dose of the basic regimen, the booster was applied to 71.4% of the population with 18 years of age or older and only 39.8% of those able to receive the fourth dose, that is, people aged 40 years or older, returned to their posts. This age group started receiving the fourth dose on June 21.

There are still 20% of children aged 5 to 11 years without starting immunization. In all, 111,200 children in the municipality in this range were not taken to the posts to be vaccinated against covid-19, 138,500 have already received the first dose and 310,400 are on the complete two-dose schedule.

cases

Panels from the Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro (SMS) indicate an increase in the number of serious cases and hospitalizations for covid-19 in the city since the end of May. In June, 829 people with covid-19 were hospitalized in the public network. At the moment, there are 159 hospitalized for the disease.

Data from MonitoraCovid-19 from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) confirm the return of the disease. In moving averages of seven days, the municipality of Rio de Janeiro recorded a minimum of 231 new cases on April 27 and reached zero the number of deaths, the mark of June 7. On June 24, cases rose to 3,800 and deaths rose to two this week.

The SMS reported that it meets the epidemiological scenario and provides extra points for vaccination.

“The Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro (SMS-Rio) is always attentive and intensifying the actions developed by the coordinators of the different areas of the city, responsible for the management of the Primary Care units. Extra vaccination posts are placed at various points in the city to facilitate access to the vaccine”.

doses

SMS reminds that vaccination is recommended for all people from 5 years of age. Up to 11 years of age, two doses of the basic calendar should be given. Between the ages of 12 and 39, a booster dose is recommended. For all who are 40 years of age or older, it is necessary to take the fourth dose to ensure continuity of immunization against severe forms of the disease.

Boosters are given at four-month intervals. With the recommendation of an additional dose for those who initially took Janssem’s single-dose vaccine, the number of doses also reaches four to complete the cycle, according to age.
