The Justice of Rio de Janeiro decreed today (7) the preventive detention of the German consul Uwe Herbert Hahn. He was arrested in the act yesterday (6), suspected of killing partnerthe Belgian Walter Henri Maximilen Biot last Friday (5).
The consul was submitted this Sunday to a custody hearing at the Benfica jail, where he is being held. According to the Justice, the diplomat’s defense asked for the relaxation of the prison, alleging consular immunity, but Judge Rafael de Almeida Rezende considered that the murder, which took place in the couple’s property, bears no relation to consular functions.
The judge took into account the existence of several injuries on the victim’s body, one of them compatible with bruises and another with the use of a cylindrical instrument (such as a stick) and the finding of blood stains in the couple’s bedroom and bathroom.
For the magistrate, the maintenance of the prison is important to avoid risks to the collection of evidence and the escape of the suspect.
