corinthians reversed this Tuesday the hiring of a technical assistant for supporting the protests of Bolsonaro supporters who are calling for a coup against the president-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da silva.
The Sao Paulo club reported in a note that Rodrigo Santanawhose hiring was announced on Monday, will no longer “be part of the technical committee” of the first team for the 2023 season.
“The club and the professional, by mutual agreement, chose not to follow up on the contract,” Corinthians added.
Santana was going to join the technical commission led by Fernando Lázaro, but the board began to receive strong pressure from advisers and fans since it became known that he participated in coup demonstrations against Lula’s victory at the polls.
Since the elections were held on October 30, thousands of supporters of the current ruler, the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, have demonstrated outside military barracks in various cities across the country.
They are unaware of the result of the elections and demand an “intervention” by the Armed Forces to prevent Lula from assuming power as of next January 1st.
Santana participated in at least one of these protests, as published on his social networks. His position contrasts with the philosophy of the so-called ‘People’s Team’, where in the 1980s a pro-democracy movement emerged driven by the players against the military dictatorship that prevailed at the time (1964-1985).
