Coparmex calls for guaranteeing minority participation in Congress

In ruling on the allocation of seats in the Congress of the Union, the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) considered that Democracy in Mexico is at risk.

José Medina Mora Icaza, leader of the organization, supported by the presidents of the 71 business centers of Coparmex, said that the citizens complied in the electoral process, so he called on the 11 INE counselors and the five magistrates of the Electoral Court to make a reading that always ensure the participation of minorities and a systematic understanding of Article 54 of the Constitution.

He noted that It’s not fair that some decisions are made based on a coalition to comply, but that within the limits set by the Magna Carta, at a maximum of 8 percent of representation and a maximum of 300 deputies, it is taken literally by party. We believe that the historical study shows that the 8 percent limit should be understood by party or coalition or political force. The limit of 300 deputies means that the Constitution cannot be changed without the opinion of the opposition force, that is, that there is this discussion that enriches any modification to the Constitution. We want to defend our vote..

He commented that just as they have defended the INE, they trust this institution to make the decision that applies to reality so that Mexico can advance in democracy.
