Controversy in Honduras over the hiring of 86 Cuban doctors

MIAMI, United States.- The Honduran Minister of Health, Manuel Matheu, confirmed this Wednesday that his government “has already decided to bring 86 specialist Cuban doctors,” and assured that the criticism in this regard is due to misinformation.

As reported local media of the Central American nation, despite the fact that the Honduran Medical College (CMH) assures that there are many unemployed doctors in the country, the government maintains that they are general, and specialists are needed.

In that sense, the Honduran official explained that there are hospitals in which there are no surgeons, or they have only one gynecologist, which is why the government has decided to bring in specialists for those vacancies.

For his part, the president of the CMH of the northern chapter, Óscar Sánchez, denounced the actions of the government of Xiomara Castro and assured that there is concern in the union because Cubans will be hired over Honduran specialists.

Sánchez also denied that national doctors reject jobs, and explained that “the Ministry of Health has made many appointments in large cities, while they want to distribute other doctors in areas where there are no conditions to work.”

Regarding salary, Sánchez said that he understands that the Cuban doctors who arrive in Honduras will have a salary of 2,000 dollars a month, which will not go directly into their pockets, but rather to the regime in Havana, information that the Cuban official health has declined.

According to Matheu “his medical colleagues are misinformed because they are already talking about salary and not even Health knows how much Cubans will be paid, since it is not a negotiation made by the Secretariat.”

However, the Honduran Minister of Health said on Wednesday that Honduran doctors “must be paid 15 months’ salary and a separate guard, and Cubans only 12 months and for full days.”

Manuel Matheu lashed out during his statements against his colleagues and said that the role of the Medical College “has been to go on strike, to appoint doctors, because they think of their interests and not those of the people.”

The hiring of the 86 Cuban doctors has created a controversy in the country, which has had problems in the health sector for years, according to the CMH director.

Dr. Sánchez told Proceso Digital that “the collaboration provided by Cuba is appreciated, however, clarity is requested and that priority be given to Honduran doctors, since it is estimated that the payment of Cuban doctors will be around 2 thousand dollars per month. , because it includes lodging, food and other expenses”. Those resources, he criticized, “go to the Government of Cuba.”

“The government should focus on improving the health system and not bring what is already in Honduras,” he said.

The hiring of these 86 Cuban doctors by the Government of Honduras comes after Mexico will announce In May of this year, he had signed an agreement with the island to bring at least 500 doctors to the Aztec nation.
