Former Uruguayan soccer players Diego Lugano and Sebastián ‘Loco’ Abreu, as well as Argentine goalkeeper Carlos ‘Mono’ Navarro Montoya and former Brazilian defender Junior Baiano will meet in Paraguay on November 5 to play an “Stars Match” in support to the Telethon Foundation.
This was announced at a press conference by the president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), Alejandro Domínguez, and the director of the Teletón Foundation, Víctor Ibarrola.
“We commit ourselves as an institution and in a personal capacity to do our bit to make this once again a success,” said Domínguez, who led the signing of an agreement for the sporting event, aimed at raising funds for the foundation.
In addition to former South American football figures who have announced their participation, Domínguez anticipated that they hope to receive the greetings of the Argentines Lionel Messi and Sergio Kun Agüero.
For his part, Ibarrola highlighted the importance of this match, noting that the Telethon was badly hit by the pandemic.
“They were two terrible years economically, the collection of our television event that turns 40 in Paraguay this year was reduced by almost half,” he lamented.
According to Ibarrola, one of the rehabilitation centers that served almost 150 families had to close its doors after reaching the collection goal in the last two years.
In this context, he called “to turn the party around” by supporting the event.
The sports activity, which will take place at the headquarters of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP), in the city of Luque, will bring together athletes from different disciplines, medalists from the South American Sports Organization (Odesur) and “international reinforcements” who will voluntarily participate in the exhibition match, Ibarrola added.
