Confagan: Meat consumption is between 6 and 12 kilos per capita first quarter of the year

Meat consumption increases to 10 kg per capita per year

In May 2022, the National Confederation of Cattlemen (Confagan) reported a slight recovery in the sector, after experiencing a drop in consumption. In this period, the intake of meat per person went from 8 kilos to 12 kilograms, which represented, at that time, a recovery of 50%

Vice President of the National Confederation of Cattlemen (They confuse),Tony De Elias, reported this Monday, March 27, that meat consumption in the country decreased in the first quarter of the year due to lack of purchasing power, specifying that consumption is between 6 and 12 kilograms per capita.

In May 2022, Confagan reported a slight recovery in the sector, after experiencing a drop in consumption. In this period, meat consumption went from 8 kilos to 12 kilograms per person, which represented a 50% recovery at that time.

“There came a time when we were on a floor of 8 kilos of meat per person per year, it was a very high drop, but we are already reaching 12 kilos, we are increasing and we hope that in the coming years we can stabilize at 24 kilos. kilos per person per year, which we reached a few years ago”, he points out.

However, given the figures presented for the first quarter of the year, the long-awaited stability that Confagan hoped to achieve is not only far from materializing, but also the consumption of meat per person decreased by two kilos, reaching at least 6 kilos per person at anus.

In April 2022, the Family Farming Association reported that 70% of Venezuelans do not consume animal protein. This means that 3 out of 10 Venezuelans cannot regularly afford to include meat in their diet, because they don’t have enough money to buy even if there is enough production to cover all the demand.

In March 2021, the president of the National Federation of Cattlemen (Fedenaga), Armando Chacín, recalled that meat consumption in the country went from more than 65 kilos per capita in 1999 to only 3 kilos in 2020.

The figure registered in Venezuela is much lower when compared to the meat intake in Colombia in March 2022, when it was 17 kilos per person per year, according to information from the Colombian Federation of Cattlemen. While in Argentina, the consumption of beef stood at 118 kg per capita.

“More serious” problems in the sector

Among the “most serious” problems facing the agricultural sector, the acquisition of inputs for animal health stands out. He explained that before the purchase of these implements was made from transnational companies located in the country, when the “ideal” thing is that that Basket of Agricultural Inputs was brought to the nation “by healthy and legal means.”

It should be noted that the inputs that should have that basket are those linked to animal reproduction that “are expensive” and those of health for the eradication of fever, such as foot-and-mouth disease and leptospirosis.

Regarding the states most affected by the rustling, De Elías pointed out that the list is headed by Apure and Falcón. “Sometimes they take a whole herd of 1,000 animals, 500 animals, 600 animals,” he said. “At this moment I am being subjected to the vaccine,” he denounced while stating that the affected people owe US $1,000, US $500, US $10,000, “that depends on the need of the offender.”
