MIAMI, United States. – The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) ad this Thursday that will deliver the 2022 International Press Freedom Award to Cuban reporter Abraham Jiménez Enoa and three other journalists from Iraqi Kurdistan, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Calling the honorees “champions of press freedom,” CPJ said they “have withstood immense challenges, including government crackdowns, assault, and imprisonment to bring independent reporting to the public amid widespread misinformation and unrestrained war.”
“Our award winners exemplify journalism at its best: work that sheds light on the impacts of war, corruption and abuse of power on everyday life,” said CPJ President Jodie Ginsberg. “We look forward to honoring these inspiring journalists, who demonstrate the central role journalism plays in serving the public good,” she added.
CPJ also noted that three of this year’s laureates are currently living in exile, saying this reflected a “growing trend in which journalists are forced to leave their home countries or risk imprisonment, violence and violence.” even threatened with death.
Abraham Jiménez Enoa, currently exiled in Spain, is an independent journalist and co-founder of the narrative journalism magazine The sneezelaunched in 2016. She is also a columnist for Washington Post Y leopard.
CPJ defined Jiménez Enoa as “a prominent and outspoken voice within Cuba’s media community, providing new perspectives on the challenges facing independent journalists and reports on issues rarely covered by the state media, including racism on the Island.”
Likewise, the organization regretted that in 2020 State Security agents had detained, handcuffed and stripped the Cuban reporter. On that occasion, Jiménez Enoa was interrogated for five hours and threatened with reprisals against him and his family for his writings in his monthly column in Washington Post.
“Persistent harassment and censorship forced Jiménez to flee to Spain in 2021, where he currently lives in exile,” CPJ also lamented.
For his part, Jiménez Enoa described the award granted by the organization as “a great honor”. “It is a commitment to continue counting Cuba and to continue urging Cubans to raise their voices. We Cubans have the right to say what we think and to have a free press, a free country”, wrote on facebook.
The honorees will be honored during a live gala dinner in New York City on November 17, 2022.
