Colombia wants to hold a meeting of finance ministers

The Colombian Minister of Finance, Jose Antonio Ocampoannounced in an interview with ‘EFE’ his intention to convene a meeting of ministers of Latin American Treasuryamong which it hopes that those of Chile, Brazil and Mexico will appear, to strengthen tax cooperation.

(See: Ocampo’s call in Davos for greater tax justice).

During his participation in the World Economic Forum of DavosOcampo explained that with this initiative, which has the support of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) and Open Society, intends to strengthen tax cooperation in Latin America and complement the agreements adopted two years ago within the framework of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which, in his opinion, “were incomplete.”

(See: The owners of wealth should be more transparent, says Ocampo).

At the moment, a technical meeting is scheduled for May to prepare a meeting of finance ministers that could be held in the month of July, among whose objectives Ocampo has highlighted the limitation of tax competition, to prevent “some countries offer lower tax rates than others”.

And also, the Colombian official proposes, that large multinationals, especially those that develop their activity in the digital realm, “effectively pay their taxes where they have their economic activity and where they generate their benefits.”
