Colin Cantwell, who contributed to fantasy in famous films, has died at the age of 90

Colin Cantwellthe technician who designed the X-Wing ships and the TIE-Fighter from the “Star Wars” series, died at the age of 90 in Denver, Colorado, last Friday the 21st for reasons that have not yet been revealed, although the news of his death death went unnoticed until this Monday for the big media.

Born in San Francisco, California, in 1932, Cantwell was simultaneously an architect, engineer and writer, and his many skills allowed him to produce stunning special effects for action films. Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick and George Lucasafter passing through NASA in the 1960s.

Cantwell, American designer of the iconic spaceships of the “Star Wars” saga, died at his home, his partner Sierra Dall reported to The Hollywood Reporter. Passionate about space, architecture and animation, the designer left great special effects made in the early 80’s for renowned directors.

In 1984 he was nominated for a Bafta Award for his special effects for “War games”a remembered film by John Badham that investigated aspects of the networks before the arrival of the Internet and that had a youthful Matthew Broderick in its cast.

He was also passionate about the space universe from an early age, a taste acquired thanks to the numerous books in his primary school library, which he devoured during his very long convalescence, suffering from tuberculosis.

Colin Cantwell then enrolled at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), where he honed his skills while taking an interest in animation. After graduation, he worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA in the 1960s when the United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in the space race.
