Migrantes cubanos, Balseros

MIAMI, United States. — The United States Coast Guard (USCG) intercepted a group of Cuban rafters who were trying to arrive illegally in South Florida on Tuesday morning.

A statement from that federal agency indicated that the migrants were located about 20 miles south of Cayo Boca Chica.

“A Coast Guard team stopped this vessel, on Tuesday, at approximately 10 am, about 20 miles south of Boca Chica, so that it would not enter the US illegally,” indicates the tweet published by the US maritime authority. .

The information from the US Coast Guard did not specify the number of migrants traveling on the boat, although it could be about 20 as seen in a photo shared on social networks.

Despite the strong operations in the Florida Strait to dissuade migrants from reaching US territory, maritime incursions continue to be the order of the day.

In the last 24 hours alone, the US Border Patrol had responded to 10 illegal landings in the Florida Keys, Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar said today.

The official revealed that since October 1, 2022, agents have responded to 32 migrant arrivals in which some 450 people have been intercepted.

Recently, a family of 20 Cubans arrived on the shores of the United States after setting sail from the coastal town of Cojímar (Havana) in a speedboat and crossing the Straits of Florida in 10 and a half hours.
