CNE election heats up: candidate denies being a political record of the Ombudsman

This Wednesday the election of the new magistrates of the National Electoral Council (CNE) will take place and the political parties have almost defined who their candidates will be to occupy those seats.

In the middle of this process, the controversy has focused on one of the postulates of the Liberal Party, Altus Baqueroabout whom some complaints have been filed by possible disabilities and who they point out as the person who could have the support of the Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo.

However, the political leader denied these claims. “The Colombian Liberal Party, who was the one that made the nomination of my candidacy before the Congress of the Republic, there is no political godfatherit is really the community that supports my candidacy,” he said in a statement.

“I am not a file of the defender of the people’s defender, Carlos Camargo, I have known him for a long time, more than 15 years, we have had a relationship not only personal but also academic, but I am not really anyone’s file, what we have is the support of a community, of a party, as stated in the Constitution and the law,” he added.

Notice that if you fully meet the experience requirements that are required to assume a seat in the CNE.

“The date of graduation and undergraduate studies at Universidad del Rosario was August 22, 2007, if you add from that date to August 22, 2022, the 15 years are clearly the election is on August 24, here there is no call, only the law that protects the election of the magistrates, “he said.

Baquero also affirms that he has sufficient preparation to address electoral issues from the highest court that is responsible for examining these matters.

“I have the preparation that is required, I have performed in great detail in the positions that have been entrusted to me, I have studies and knowledge of the electoral system, I have worked alongside one of the men who knows the electoral system in Colombia the most, Dr. Carlos Ariel Sánchez, who was a CNE magistrate and registrar on two occasions. I have undergraduate, postgraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees under my belt and I have thoroughly studied each of these CNE variables”, he indicated.
