Cinter: MTSS evaluates granting special unemployment insurance for dismissed workers

The Ministry of Labor is studying the possibility of granting a special unemployment insurance regime for the Cinter metallurgical company.

“The situation of the metallurgical company is a situation of dismissal, so partial unemployment insurance does not correspond,” said the Minister of Labor, Pablo Mieres, this Friday in statements to the press.

In any case, Mieres assured that his portfolio received “a proposal by the PIT-CNT” for the ministry to study the possibility of applying a special unemployment insurance for Cinter employees.

“The workers of this company suffered a sudden resolution(because) there was not even a preparation” on the part of the company when communicating the news to the workers who were left unemployed, indicated the minister.

“We found out yesterday that (this company) has been using unemployment insurance since before” this determination, added Mireswho also explained that not all metallurgical workers are entitled to “six months” of coverage, since this tool had previously been used by the company; this reality “depends on each worker”.

“By virtue of this they ask us for a solution,” concluded Mieres. “There was no sign that the company was going to withdraw from Uruguay,” he said. In addition, the minister pointed out that “there were people who had been working there for years”, for which a solution for the unemployed is being evaluated.

150 employees worked directly at Cinter and another 30 indirectly. As a result of the dismissal, the metallurgical union announced a partial strike due to the closure.

Secondly, The Minister of Labor indicated that he will meet with different actors of the metallurgical industry to analyze the labor reality of this sector in the country.
