Christmas is coming and families begin to think about the food they will be able to share on one of the most special nights of the year. There are poultry producers who are committed to bringing a healthier option to these tables: turkey meat.

According to market reports, there are companies that began to specialize in the production of this bird, which has allowed imports of this food to decrease over the years.

One of these poultry farmers is Freddy Valdez, owner of Granja Pavos Santa Cruz, who offers a producer price to the consumer of Bs 40 per kilo, when the imported turkey sold by other companies ranges between Bs 48 and 60 per kilowhich represents a notable difference when buying complete birds of between four and ten kilos.

“They are turkeys raised here, in Santa Cruz,” Valdez said. “It is quality meat at an affordable price,” he added, which is important at a time when families have less income, after the hardest of the pandemic and after the 36-day strike from Santa Cruz.

In 2010, for example, admissions of this meat totaled 144,713 kilos, a volume that rose to 170,648 kilos in 2014 and then dropped to 74,360 kilos in 2019, a year before the pandemic, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). processed by the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE).
