The College of Journalists of Chile began an investigation in order to find the Chilean writer Gonzalo Lira, whose disappearance in Ukraine was reported last Monday, the entity’s president, Danilo Ahumada, reported on Wednesday.

“We started on our own efforts to know the whereabouts of Lira, but we have not yet found official information on the circumstances of his disappearance,” said Ahumada.according to the Sputnik news agency.

The leader said that he contacted the organization Reporters Without Borders, which replied that it had no official record of the Lira case or of an alleged disappearance related to cases of freedom of expression.

Ahumada assured that the College will continue to carry out efforts despite the fact that Lira is not a journalist – he is a writer and filmmaker – since he was performing functions of communicator and disseminator of information through social networks.

The whereabouts of Lira – 54 years old, born in the United States and a Chilean citizen– unknown since last Friday, people close to him denounced on Monday before the Chilean consulate in Moscow.

The Chilean Foreign Ministry reported on Tuesday that it was “in contact with the relevant entities” in order to find out “any news about the location of the compatriot,” according to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera.
