Dr. Débora Núñez, general coordinator of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of UNA – Hospital de Clínicas, reported that once again other diseases are being postponed due to lack of beds and in this sense, arranging for scheduled surgeries.
The pediatric therapist indicated that Very serious cases of chikungunya are occurring in children, which in several cases leads them directly to needing a bed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. He believes that what happens in the teaching hospital is a reflection of what happens in other hospitals, since daily requests are received from those located in areas of the interior of the country.

The professional stated thatReceives requests for beds in children’s therapy from hospitals in Caacupé, Hernandarias, Pedro Juan Caballero and that Concepción also appears in the statistics they manage, among others; and that they can rarely respond, since they also have patients from the Hospital de Clínicas who are admitted through the emergency room, or have complications in the ward and must go to intensive care.
He added that patients have a multidisciplinary treatment, for which they are followed up with the cardiologist. Likewise, they do it with children who had encephalitis, who are assisted in conjunction with the neurologist.

“Our patients hospitalized in children’s therapy are between 90 to 100 percent for cases of chikungunya, whatever they want to call it: with shock, with myocarditis, with multiple organ failure, with encephalitis. They are very serious and complex cases, and we need beds for other relegated ones such as scheduled surgeries, which need to be attended to ”, he added.
