A group of merchants from the municipal market of Charallave, Miranda state, protested this Friday, September 30, rejecting the increase in municipal taxes of up to 300% applied by the mayor of the Cristóbal Rojas municipality, according to the protesters themselves.
The complaint of the protesters is that the mayor’s office would have adjusted the Municipal Tax Unit to 1.25% of the value of the petro, that is, about 0.75 dollars, which may not seem like much, but it is multiplied according to the number of tax units. to turn off.
Some 250 Municipal Tax Units must pay merchants in Charallave for the simple fact of having a warehouse in which they store their products. That translates to about $187, currently equivalent to Bs 1,500 according to the official exchange rate published by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV).
“Who is going to pay that amount if most of the businesses are at zero?”, Pura Ordaz, winner of the Charallave market, was asked by an interviewer. the whistle.
The president of the Union of Merchants of Charallave, José Gregorio Bello, stressed that it is common for merchants to pay about Bs 2,300 ($287) a month to the mayor’s office for municipal taxes and that they will take street actions until Mayor Humberto Marte take into account.
«We are going to carry out a street action so that the mayor takes us into consideration and reverses that resolution. Let them increase, but we can’t work to pay the mayor’s office. We have to provide for our families,” he stressed.

On the other hand, Bello denounced that the use of the petro as a meter to calculate taxes in the municipality corresponds to a “confiscation decree” that does not take into account the conditions of commerce in that locality.
“This is a confiscatory decree. This is going to end up bankrupting all the small and medium-sized merchants who make a living in this market and almost all of those on Bolívar Avenue, because it is already too much money, “he said.
The Charallave market generates approximately 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. The merchants highlight the importance of this commercial space for the economic activity of the municipality.
