In the presence of the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, the Defense Minister, Maya Fernández, and the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, Eduardo Vergara, the Chamber of Deputies approved a new extension of the State of Constitutional Exception in the southern part of the country.
Specifically, this is the twenty-sixth time that the Lower House has endorsed the measure, which was ratified with 96 votes in favour, 21 against and 13 abstentions, registering a greater success than the last extension endorsed by the corporation on the 10th of January, where it garnered fewer votes in favour, more abstentions and rejections.
This Monday’s vote, which still needs to be ratified by the Senate, could be the penultimate extension in several more weeks. This, since this Thursday the project that would allow, starting from the sixth extension, the extension to be for 45 days and not 15, as it is currently, is on the table of the Chamber. Anyway, it will be just revised this week
It should be remembered that the Government of President Gabriel Boric issued the measure for the first time on May 16, 2022. After this, it was extended by decree and later, complying with the constitutional order, requested Congress to extend the State of Exception. Which has already happened 16 times.
