Cases of monkeypox rise in Colombia

Monkeypox: how would the contagion be stopped in Colombia?

The Colombian Ministry of Health reported on Monday 27 new cases of monkeypox detected in the country, a figure that reaches 582 diagnoses for this disease, most of them in Bogotá.

(Colombia doubles cases of monkeypox: figure rises to 273).

The National Institute of Health (INS) announced that as of today it will publish “a weekly report of confirmed cases of monkeypox”a document that will specify, among others, the departments in which the cases have been detected and their origin.

The first of these weekly reports indicated that of the new cases, 19 were identified in Antioquia, six in Cundinamarca, one in Bogotá and one in Tolima.

Regarding the total number of confirmed cases of monkeypox, Bogotá has 442, followed by Antioquia (62), Cundinamarca (18), Cali (14) and Tolima (10). Almost half of the cases detected in the country have a “unknown source” (42.6%), while a significant part is “under study” (32.6%).

(Monkeypox: they agree to distribute the vaccine in Latin America).

On July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

This outbreak began in Europe last May and was the first to be seen outside the group of countries in central Africa, where the disease was considered endemic.

The WHO said last Thursday that confirmed cases of the disease rose to 41,664 in 96 countries and 12 deaths had been reported so far. Monkeypox, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is transmitted through direct contact with people who have symptoms of the disease.

In the case of Colombia, on July 26, the government raised the risk of monkeypox transmission from moderate to high.
