Carlos Canales on candidates for AMPE: "People linked to violence want to take it"

Carlos Canales Mayor of miraflores and one of the applicants AMPE- Association of Municipalities of Peru, sent a clear and direct message to the mayors about putting aside confrontations and ideologies. This is a clear allusion to Dennys CubaMayor of Huancayo by Free Peru and also candidate for the presidency of this association.

Why were you interested in applying?

All my life, through political activity, I have traveled the interior of the country, hamlets, populated centers, where I have seen the lack of the State in basic services and even in the training of the tourism sector, mypes and SMEs. That was what motivated me to propose a series of initiatives that have to take place in true municipal work.

What are the first actions you will take if elected?

I believe that with the team that we are building to direct AMPE, we will be able to be the coordinator and manager among those municipalities in the interior of the country that are abandoned by government officials and find solutions to their problems, so that a better quality of life for the residents of all of Peru. The first thing we have to do is introduce all the files approved to the budget of the municipalities so that these projects can be carried out this year. You have to act quickly.

If you are president of AMPE, are you going to request any special faculty?

We are going to propose a change in the laws for the Foncomun. If we really want to execute (budget) we have to provide simpler, less complicated processes, so that the district mayors can execute the works. We want AMPE to allow them to have a place where we support them –in agreement with the universities– to manage their files for the works. We are starting management. Another thing, we want the assets seized by drug trafficking and illegal mining to go into the hands of the mayors who do not have a vehicle to get around. It is necessary to work hand in hand to reorient the resources of the State.

Another applicant is the mayor of Huancayo Dennys Cuba, who is still linked to Vladimir Cerrón’s Peru Libre. What does experience tell us?

We believe that this space is for governance and not a space that says Lima yes, Lima no. I want to call on all the mayors of Peru not to fall into the game of politicizing AMPE, of taking people who are linked to extreme violence who want to take over spaces, such as the association of municipalities, to lead us to confrontation, instead of the joint and team work, whether we like or not who is in power.
