The government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua ordered the General Directorate of Registration and Control of Non-profit Organizations of the Ministry of the Interior to cancel the operations of the Diocesian Caritas Association of León.
On December 31, 2022, Cáritas de León, an auxiliary arm of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua, requested the “voluntary dissolution” of its legal personality “through minutes” after a meeting of its members alleging “decrease in funds.”
This action to close Caritas intensifies the situation between the Catholic Church and the Nicaraguan government, which since March announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Holy See after Pope Francis described the regime as a “rude dictatorship” and “Hitlerian dictatorship.” Ortega regime for having sentenced a bishop to 26 years in prison.
