The sugarcane workers Yesterday they held a protest in the vicinity of the United States embassy, to demand from the diplomatic representative, RobertThomas, investigate the existence of an alleged gang of hired assassins who will arrive in the country with the purpose of kidnapping or assassinating the leaders of the Sugarcane Workers Union (UTC), Jesus Núñez, Alexander Reymond and Benoble Joseph.
Jesús Núñez, who is a spokesman for the UTC, said that the complaint is based on confidences received that said action against them has been conceived by sectors of the Romana Sugar Mill, the sugar mill’s security guard and the National Police that operates in the Eastern region, specifically in the province of La Romana.

“In the last two months, the Central Romana private guard, together with the Department of Human Resources and a representative of the union of that company, has been forcibly evicting members of our organization of sugarcane workers from various bateyes, such as Batey 80, batey Nigua”, he expressed.
Núñez recalled that his union supports the statement by 16 US congressmen who petitioned the president Joe Biden investigate the forced labor in the Dominican Republic, to which, according to what he assured, sugarcane workers are subjected.
