The government of Canada imposed sanctions against various Russian media outlets, including television channels and news corporations RT, Sputnik, VGTRK Y Pervi Kanal.
In addition to punishing several journalists from the sanctioned press organs, the Ottawa decision affects the circulation of these media in Canadian territory, including social networks.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly unveiled this fridayduring a meeting of the foreign ministers of the G20 in Bali, the additional sanctions on Moscow on the occasion of the invasion of Ukraine, reported the press service of the Foreign Ministry. In total, the new round of sanctions includes 29 individuals and 15 entities from Russia.
According to the newspaper National Observerthe Russian journalist Petr Akópov is one of those affected by the measure because “he wrote by order of the Kremlin, a justification of the war favorable to the president Vladimir Putin” about sending troops to Ukraine.
Also, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Komsomolskaya PravdaVladimir Sungorkin was included in the list because his outlet was “described by Putin as his favorite newspaper.”
Canada, which has taken restrictive measures against more than 1,600 individuals and entities since the war began on February 24, has now included the former CEO of software developer Yandex, Tigran Judaverdian, Ministry spokeswoman of the Interior, Irina Volk, and the Rossotrudnichestvo humanitarian cooperation agency, among others.
“The Russian propaganda machine must answer for its lies. Canada is committed to fighting disinformation at all times. Today we make it clear that they will have to pay for their actions. Canada is with Ukraine,” Joly said.
Canadian sanctions also include Patriarch Kirill, the highest representative of the Orthodox Church in Russia, for his support of Putin and the invasion of Ukrainian territory.
On the other hand and with immediate effect, Canada has prohibited the “importation of gold from Russia”. The new regulations take effect immediately, even before they are published in the government gazette, according to another official statement.
