Brian Nichols meets with opposition delegation and ratifies support for free elections

United States officials held a meeting with members of the Unitary Platform that represents the opposition in the dialogue in Mexico. Brian Nichols has repeatedly shown his support for the 2015 National Assembly and the opposition leaders that make it up, despite the fact that Juan Guaidó does not now preside over the entity and therefore is not recognized as interim president by the United States

The Undersecretary of State of the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, reported on the night of Friday, January 13, that he held a meeting with representatives of the opposition delegation in the dialogue mechanism in Mexico, with whom he discussed the objective of achieve free and fair presidential elections in Venezuela by 2024.

The information was disseminated on the Twitter account of the US official. He published a photograph in which members of the Unitary Platform delegation, such as Stalin González, Luis Aquiles Moreno, Tomás Guanipa, Mariela Magallanes or Gerardo Blyde, together with US officials, can be seen.

In the publication, Nichols ratifies the support of the United States for the work of the opposition delegation and the support for the Venezuelan people in the objective of restoring democracy through elections that grant legitimacy to the Executive Power again, since Washington ignores the administration of Nicolás Maduro and considers the National Assembly elected in 2015 as the only democratically elected institution.

“Valuable meeting with members of the Negotiating Delegation of the Unitary Platform of Venezuela to reaffirm the support of the United States for their work to achieve free and fair elections in Venezuela in 2024. We support the Venezuelan people in their effort to restore democracy” says Nichols.

In recent days, Nichols has spoken to defend the members of the National Assembly elected in 2015after Attorney General Tarek William Saab anticipated that they would issue red Interpol warrants against parliamentarians abroad for their arrest even if they take refuge in Spain and the United States.

«The United States supports those who courageously defend Venezuelan democracy. New attacks against the opposition, including against members of the National Assembly, prevent democratic solutions for Venezuela. Efforts must focus on a path to free and fair elections in 2024,” she stated.

Faced with this position, Nicolás Maduro responded by emphasizing that the only legislative authority in Venezuela is the National Assembly elected in 2020with a Chavista majority and headed by Jorge Rodríguez.

Nichols and the Joe Biden administration continue to support the National Assembly elected in 2015 despite the fact that they withdrew their recognition of Juan Guaidó as interim president after the same Parliament decided to eliminate this figure by modifying the Statute that Governs the Democratic Transition.
